SHORT BIO

“Amanti – Santi – Naviganti” is the new solo project of Italian artist Antonio Smiriglia, ambassador of the popular music from the Nebrodi in Sicily. The project will include a concept album of 9 tracks where Antonio is ........... It will also develop as a live performance that will be available in various formats.

Antonio’s powerful voice is unique and brought him to various collaborations. Ambrogio Sparagna, for instance, who is one of the main characters of the new Italian folk music and the director of The Orchestra Popolare Italiana (Womex 2009) at Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, offered Antonio to be the Tavola Tonda Orchestra’s lead vocalist in various live performances in Sicily. But this is only the tip of the iceberg.

For Antonio, it all started when he was 8 years old. He was a member of the local choir of Galati Mamertino, a small village on the hills in front of Capo d’Orlando and the majestic area of the Eolian Islands. Later, while serving in the military, he became a good friend of Peppe Bara who introduced him to the works of the Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare founded by Italian legendary musician and songwriter Eugenio Bennato.

Back to his native island and inspired by the experience of CCP, Antonio started a band called Mokarta. In the following years, he fully dedicated himself to traditional popular music from Sicily and his own area (Nebrodi). He became the frontman of Discanto Siculo, and, later at the beginning of the new century, helped give a new direction to the local choir Cantori of Galati Mamertino, the keepers of Nebrodi’s oral tradition.

«Apart from giving them a general organization - says Smiriglia - I limited myself to fleshing out the repertoire by pulling out of their memory some pieces that they did not perform anymore, like “cunti”, lullabies and nursery rhymes. Their sound remained authentic and typical to the region. I also brought them to various venues in northern and central Italy. The great maestro, Franco Battiato, called us to present his opus “Traversando il Bardo”. I helped him rearrange the song “U Cuntu” which he then sang with the entire choir.”

Antonio’s new project is the result of serious research works within Sicily’s rich cultural heritage with a specific focus on the local heritage of the Nebrodi. It takes the form of an opus that is both a vehicle for sharing deep and ancient feelings and an innovative framework to pass down age-old knowledge alongside a line where tradition becomes modernity and modernity tradition.

“ Digging in Sicily's rich cultural heritage to research the soul of Mediterranean folk music."
