SCANDINAVIA'S NEW STRING TRIO
Nyckelharpa | Viola d'Amore | Hardanger fiddle
album "NORTHER RESONANCE"
Northern Resonance are a new Swedish folk trio composed of Anna Ekborg on violin and viola d’amore, Petrus Dillner, on nyckelharpa, and Jerker Hans-Ers on Hardanger fiddle and octave violin. All members are sharp and highly skilled players with deep roots in traditional music and their feet into the Third Millennium.
You might think that traditional folk isn’t something for you. All that fiddle, the wheeze of an exhausted accordion, and old tunes played thousands of times over generation by a bunch of drunk musicians. This unfairly prejudiced idea would certainly change by listening to Northern Resonance and newly composed and arranged folk music. A strong melody could pierce your heart and win you over entirely.
For folk music fans, contemporary Swedish bands do not need an introduction. The legendary artistic trio Väsen, made up of veteran folk musicians, are still a giant of modern Scandinavian folk music. More recently, Nordic, another acoustic trio, made their name in Sweden and internationally thanks to their infectious charm, joy for playing, and fresh sound.
In that niche, Northern Resonance find themselves at their ease. They are part of the new generation of inspired musicians paying homage to the music and dance traditions of the North, featuring great verve and fine musicianship. With their debut album and a series of concerts in Sweden, Northern Resonance have already placed a glorious sound. Fiddle instruments intertwine beautifully, run in tandem, and veer off into unexpected time signatures, all while successfully creating timeless and crystalline atmospheres with plenty of space and depth.
There is great life in their tunes, and the trio knows how to bring it out. Coaxing fantastic sounds out of their chosen instruments, all Scandinavia is resonating here.
Watch that band! They are full of promise!
“Northern Resonance moves freely within the music. They create nice and expressive arrangements in a classical style with a modern sound. Always well-dressed, well-played with a harmony between fiddles, hardanger fiddle and nyckelharpa." RFoD
